Moving Mountains: A Step-By-Step Guide to Breaking Down Goals into Manageable Tasks

Updated: Mar 17

Setting goals is an essential aspect of personal and professional development, but it can often feel overwhelming to tackle such a big task. The solution is to break down your goal into smaller, manageable tasks. In this post, we'll show you how to do just that.

  1. Create a Measurement: Start by establishing how progress will be measured towards the goal and ultimately if the goal is achieved or not. Take your time on this step as it is critical to the entire process. Remember: You can't improve what you can't measure!

  2. Define Your Goal: Once a measurement has been established, next is to clearly define what you want to achieve in terms of the measurement. Write down your goal in a concise, specific and measurable manner. This will help you to stay focused and track your progress.

  3. Conduct a Brainstorm: Once you have a clear goal in mind, it's time to brainstorm. Write down all the tasks that need to be completed in order to achieve your goal. Start at the goal itself and ask "What prevents us from accomplishing this today?". Write down all of the answers and then ask the same question to each you wrote down. Note in each task which team will be executing it and if the completion of the task depends on another having been completed (dependencies). This will give you a comprehensive list of tasks to work from starting with tasks that are actionable today.

  4. Time-Quantize and Prioritize Tasks: Now that you have a list of tasks, it's time to estimate effort and prioritize. You can prioritize based on deadlines, importance, or difficulty.

  5. Create a Schedule: With your list of properly defined tasks, create a schedule to follow by starting with the ultimate goal and working backwards. This scheduling will help you to stay on track and ensure you are making progress towards your goal.

  6. Measure as You Go and Celebrate Progress: As you complete tasks, take time to celebrate your progress. This will help to keep your teams motivated and focused on the bigger picture.

Breaking down your goal into smaller, manageable tasks is a powerful strategy for achieving your goals. By following these steps, you can turn a daunting goal into a series of manageable tasks that are easier to tackle. Remember, progress is made one step at a time, so take it one task at a time and enjoy the journey.
